The following morning, as we were on our way out of town to finish up the map of southeast Gloomy Forest, Kelsea asked us to take a detour.

She led us to Apothecary Li’s pill shop. It wasn’t open yet, as the sun wasn’t even visible beyond the tall, dark trees, so Li was out back brewing new concoctions. There was a telltale sign of oddly-colored smoke drifting up behind his home, as well as a slightly rancid odor.

“Sorry about that,” he called out when he saw us. Li pulled some goggled off his face. “I just can’t seem to get this one right. What did you need?”

He looked at me when he asked and I nodded toward Kelsea. She said, “That list of desirable herbs which you think might be in the area. We’re going back out today.”

Li snapped his fingers. “Ah, yes! I have that just inside, one second.” He rushed in the door and only paused to yell at his lazy young nephew to get out of bed. Within seconds, he was back. “Here!”

The sheet of paper he gave Kelsea showed some drawing of herbs, as well as descriptions of some of their properties.

“I’d like to note this little beauty in particular,” Li said as he pointed to the top item on the list. It read, ‘Everdew Flower,’ and had the image of a white cup-shaped bloom which emitted a faint aura. “Bring back as many as you find, as this is the key ingredient in my experience pills. In fact, I’ll set up a garden of my own right back here, if that’s alright with you, Mayor Wyle.”

I waved a hand. “Anything that you think would help you run the shop more efficiently is fine by me. How big of a garden, though? Would it be better to let the Farmers set off a square of land for herbs?”

Li’s eyebrows climbed. “That would be remarkable! My profession has some skill with small herb gardens, but if we could produce herbs on the scale of a farm then I would produce and endless supply of experience pills, health pills, and anything you want!” His eyes were practically glittering with the experience he could see himself earning from all that work.

Laughing, I patted him on the shoulder. “In that case, Li, we’ll give you as much land as you want!”

Kelsea was reviewing the sheets of paper in her hands, with Alice looking over her shoulder and occasionally commenting. She overheard and perked up. “Ooh, we could even set up trade routes and train traveling merchants of our own! How do the prices of your pills compare to similar pills in the neighboring towns? If we find a pill that only our local herbs can produce, we could make a fortune shipping it all around the continent!”

Li took a step back and winced. “Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. I won’t be able to reach the kind of production until Bai reached level… 20 at least, unless we find a few more Apothecaries, but on this side of the ocean their quite sparse.
